Week 4 EOC: There Is An App For That

For women we all have that time of the month that creeps up on us. We live our life's; plan trips and vacations. What is one thing that could definitely ruin a sunny vacation in Miami or Hawaii? Make you feel and look bloated? Make just tired and uncomfortable? Your period. Some women automatically do know how many days later they will get their period. But for others it’s a tedious task of writing it down in your calendar every month. Some women forget. I believe that we need to create an app that by just putting in the day you got your period for 2 months it can project around the time you will get it for the next month. That way you would have a general idea when you are supposed to get it. This can also help with pregnancies as well. If you missed your period, you can then tell your doctor when the day of your last period was. I would mostly want to create this app because I too forget when I have gotten my period and I am planning a vacation but I don’t want to go when I’m on my period. This app will definitely make it easier for a lot of women that struggle to keep track of their days. It can also have some pointers on how to feel better while on your period. For example, it can have tea recipes or different methods on how you can get rid of cramps. Also, maybe have some coupons for tampon and pad brands. I would also have some advertising for some comfy clothing brands you can purchase as well along with pants for that time of the month. This is definitely a need in the lives of many women, it would make it much simpler for many women to have a notification on their phone that shows them kind of like a warning, “your period is approaching make sure to have a tampon/pad handy!” I would see how successful this app would be then I would go on and move to making in house products with the apps name on them such as tampons, pads and even clothing.

Week 3 EOC: My Demographics

As my demographics I fall into the Millennial category. As a Millennial, they are described to be as the people born in between the years of 1979 and 1994. I, however was born in the year 1992, just 2 years after the cut off. Millennials are to be already having their first child and have already started on their careers. The late Millennials, born in the 90's or most commonly know as the 90's babies, are more prone to buying more technology related and general media hyped items such as tablets and sneakers.

"The lucky ones have been able to keep their jobs during the difficult economic times and are making major purchasing decisions such as cars and homes; at the very least, they are buying computers, MP3 players, smartphones, tablet computers, and sneakers." (PG 55)

I personally have not started my own family so I do not relate to that part of the definition of a millennial. I do however, relate to the part where they are more prone to purchasing good related to technology and clothing. I am more concerned about the new wave of electronics, gaming and fashion as opposed to buying a home.

The next detail that they cover about Millennials is that they are far more tech savy than any other generation. That is partly in part to the technology boom that happened within the past couple of years, with the tablets and the iPhone coming into play.

"Gen Yers expect brands to be on social media. Two-thirds say a brand being on social media shows it cares about their generation, and fifty-six percent think social media sites are a great way to find out what's new with brands they like." (PG 55)

For me, this is completely true. If a brand or company is not present on social media than it doesn't exist. If you do not have a foundation online then you are virtually invisible to the minds of Millennials. Branding and social media presence is a huge factor when it comes to Gen Y. It is such a factor for us because we like name brand things. Name brand items create identity with our peers and ourselves. If we see someone wearing a Louis Vuitton handbag or an Adidas track suit we can automatically categorize them and we like that.

"Younger Millennials who shop online for apparel rely mainly on price. They also look for positive brand reviews. They typically visit their primary apparel web site forty-two times a year and make seven purchases a year"
We all live on the internet. We rely on other customer reviews when it comes to online shopping. Take Amazon for example, it is a growing online retail, music, and video streaming service that has the option like all other sites to leave comments and reviews. Millennials love knowing what they are buying and in what quality it comes in. Overall, I do believe that I fall under the Millennial category. I do find myself on the internet the majority of the day and I am definitely aware of what my own personal brand is online and in real life.

Week 3 EOC: Making Money for Good

The Make-A-Wish foundation is a non-profit organization that arranges experiences that are mostly described as "wishes" to children that have life threatening illnesses. All of their donations go directly to creating these experiences to children with illnesses. They rely on donations, volunteers, and supporters to keep their foundation growing and going.

"In the United States and its territories, on average, a wish is granted every 35 minutes. We believe a wish experience can be a game-changer. This one belief guides us and inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve." (wish.org)

This would be there main ideology behind their make a wish foundation. All of the proceeds and donations are given to the foundation and according to whatever the child wishes for is granted. For example one of the most common "wishes" that are granted are when a child wants to visit Disneyland or DisneyWorld for the day. They take the donations and plan a trip for the child for one day to Disneyland or DisneyWorld.
"A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical conditions. For many, the wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illnesses. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals say, the wish experience works in concert with medicine to make their patients feel better emotionally and even physically. That is why wishes matter. That is why we grant wishes."(wish.org)

Through make a wish foundation you can browse through all the stories they have and choose which one you want to donate to. For them, the meaning behind the wish is making the child feel more alive and positive about their fight against their life threatening illness. These are separated into 5 different categories. I wish to be, I wish to give, I wish to go, I wish to have, and I wish to meet.

"We rely on wish referrals from caring individuals to help us reach more kids with life-threatening medical conditions every year and grant them a wish that changes lives, forever. The eligibility consideration process is initiated when a wish referral inquiry is submitted to the local chapter. Learn more about who is eligible for a wish, who can refer a child and how the referral process works."(wish.org)

The base of this foundation started with a child in need. You are definitely able to refer a child but it has to follow within the requirements of the foundation. The child has reached the age of 2 1/2 and is younger than 18. They also have to have a life threatening illness. And anyone can refer a child, whether it be a parent, medical professionals or a legal guardian and also ha snot received a wish from another wish-granting organization.

Overall I believe that the make a wish foundation is a beautiful foundation in what they do. Restoring happiness in someone who only knows their illness and making a small yet huge impact on their lives and catering to the idea that wishes really do come true.

Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group Video Games

The video game industry has been suffering over the past few years. Video game consuls such as the Nintendo Wii U and Xbox have not been selling as predicted. Wii sales have been lower than expected and also video game retailers like GameStop have also reported a drop in sales over the past couple months. Although the video game industry has seen some improvement with the releases of Grand Theft Auto and Nintendo Wii’s Mario Kart it still has not solved the problem of the actual consoles themselves. The video game industry does remain positive with their upcoming releases such as Wii Sports Resort, The Beatles: Rockband and Modern Warfare 2 in November, but this still does not solve the problem of the consoles not increasing in the sales predicted. And Consoles are slowly becoming a thing of the past. As technology is moving a lot faster so is the way that we now play our video games. Using Boston’s Consulting Group hierarchy, I have arranged the different types of consoles and the way we play our video games according to how important/relevant/irrelevant they have become.

Star- Virtual Reality; Although virtual reality started off as a one-person thing but now with the introduction of being able to include the virtual reality with your friends and family. You view the virtual reality and you would see your friends in there with you while you play. I think this is definitely a star considering that people like to play video games with other people versus the computer.

Dave Ranyard, previously studio head of Sony London and now an independent VR developer, made clear at a panel discussion that he believes the future of VR is a social one, and that it will be about being transported to another place and doing something cool with your friends.”(The Guardian)

Cash Cow- Playstation 4 ; Only reason that all modern game consoles are cash cows are because they are creating new games only to the modern consoles. Also, Playstation 4 has recently rebooted all of the old Playstation 1 and 2 games are now available for purchase through the Playstation 4 networks where you can play the old games you used to play as a child on the Playstation 4. Big money maker for Sony.

“One of the biggest drawbacks to buying the $400 PlayStation 4 was that the console wasn't backwards compatible. Problem solved. You'll finally be able to play old PlayStation games on the PS4 starting this summer.”(Business Insider)
Question Mark- Augmented Reality; i.e Pokemon Go; The business behind Pokemon Go would be an interesting one. Although it is very immensely popular it isn’t really making any money in the sense that it doesn’t bring in money. Sure it attracts a number of people and you are able to play with you friends it’s not making any profit, money wise. It revisited old characters and brought them make to the new millennium. It will keep growing and more companies will create new portable games but there isn’t any profit.

One of Funomena’s upcoming games, Woorld, is described as “a hand-held Alternative Reality experience”, a “whimsical, exploratory application” that lets you place virtual objects against the backdrop of your physical environment.” (The Guardian)

Dogs- Nintendo Wii, PC Games; People will always have PC games and go back to the old Nintendo games but no one now will ever buy it to play it continuously. People still play them but there is not room for growth especially for the Nintendo Wii. With the Nintendo Wii they shut down the internet system with it so you can’t even go onto the network anymore even if you did purchase it used or new.

Week 1 EOC: My Voice

As a fashion retail management professional, I can confidently say that in my area of expertise there isn't just one definite job description and that is what I absolutely love about my profession. One day I could be sewing and helping out with a garment and the next I can be assisting in bringing a store from the ground up. Even on my off days I love watching documentaries about fashion houses and designers. Clothes themselves are a form of art and expression. People wear what they feel. I love learning anything and everything I can about street style, luxury brands and couture; even if it is just by me walking into Barney's or a store at Crystals and browsing through the different garments they have. The art and business of fashion is always constant and changes every day, that is what fascinates me about my industry.

Week 1 EOC: Great Customer Service

One example of excellent customer service that I have experienced was walking into a high end store. I accompanied my mother to the Louis Vuitton store at the Crystals at City Center and she wanted to buy a handbag. We were immediately greeted and in that instance she told them what she was looking for. We were being treated as royalty. We were brought to a seat and the handbag was brought to her and it was shown with such delicacy. We were also brought water and tea. Never in my life have I ever walked into a store and they have brought tea to the customer. My mom was completely thrilled and every question she had they answered it with ease. They made her feel super comfortable and even make me want to go back a purchase a handbag.  Even after the purchase the client advisor gave us her phone number and told us that if she had any problems with the handbag or had any questions on how to maintain it after purchase to just give her a call. We both left the store that completely exceeded our expectations and I never knew that customer service could be taken to such high standards.
